Winter work: Willow withy bed

Last winter we were fortunate to be given yellow, red and green willow cuttings and some coloured dogwoods too.

We planted them into a soggy patch at the corner of the allotment, have them a lovely deep bed of straw to stop weeds growing- and now at the end of their first year we have cut a heap of canes and uneven withies to use for weaving and garden supports.

Next winter we should have a big bundle of nice even withies to use, as the strong willow roots should let the tops grow really well through 2021.
