Fruit tree surgery today...


The plot we inherited was all orchard, just a few years old, when we took it on in the autumn.

To make space for vegetables, activities and a greenhouse we had to move a number of trees.

Fruit trees are brilliant, so we did keep all of them, but to make them fit they’re going to need training into espalier forms- but the trees are a bit too old really to start.

So our plan is to work in stages over the next year or two to begin persuading the trees into the shapes we want (the aim is to have good fruiting trees that don’t block the paths), without upsetting the trees too much with over-pruning. Here were the first few bits:
